Although the argument that democracies rarely fight each other has been widely accepted, there is little consensus on why so-called democratic peace exists. Some critics believe that the industrial revolution actually led to peace in the 19th and 20th centuries. The resulting prosperity and economic stability have made all modern countries (democratic and non-democratic) fight with each other much less than before industrialization. Several factors caused by modernization may have a greater sense of anti-war than industrialized countries. These factors include a higher standard of living, less poverty, adequate employment, more leisure time and the spread of consumerism. Modern countries no longer need to dominate each other just to survive.
